Ceramica Raku

Would you like to have the pleasure of feeling a material coming to life in your own hands? Would you like to feel the unique emotions of “creating” something and achieving amazing results as  Zen  Philosophy  prescribes?

Let curiosity and enthusiasm transport you.

Raku literally means “enjoyment” and live in harmony with nature and men.

This ceramics technique began in Japan in the 16th century and was restricted only to tea ceramics. Renewed and re-invented, Raku arrives in Europe in the early sixties. The main protagonists are:

 Earth Air Water and Fire

along with the primordial values connected to human creativity.

Once out of the furnace, the objects are immediately placed inside metal containers together with different kinds of fuels: sawdust, dry leaves, paper etc…and covered in order to achieve a strong chemical reduction owing to a lack of oxygen.

The glossiness is due to the reaction of the oxides contained in the enamels and in the particular kind of fireclay used.

The craquelè effect, on the other hand, is obtained through an oxidation process which sees the ceramic exposed to the air. Consequently, every single object is a unique and unrepeatable work of art destined to increase in value in the course of time.

Although I have undertaken several hobby techniques such as salt paste cernit, decoupage and stencil, my true gift is Raku ceramics. I was fascinated by its  originality and the randomness of the results. An innate ability in handling clay to create sculptures, bas-reliefs, pots, bowls and frames has induced me to explore new techniques adding to this compound other natural elements such as iron ash, sawdust, flour etc.

Moulding clay is an intense emotion that frees my mind from everyday life and casts me into a world of shapes and colours. When the objects are baked, the fire burning in the furnace conveys primordial sensations that  are absolutely unique.
